How often should women have a health check-up?
Women should have a general health check at least once a year. Depending on age and medical history, your GP may recommend regular screenings for cervical cancer, breast health, blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
When should I have a cervical screening test?
In Australia, women aged 25 to 74 should have a Cervical Screening Test every five years if results are normal. This test helps detect early changes that may lead to cervical cancer.
What are common women’s health concerns a GP can treat?
A GP can manage menstrual irregularities, PCOS, menopause symptoms, contraception advice, pregnancy care, urinary tract infections, breast concerns, hormonal imbalances, and mental health issues.
When should I see a doctor about irregular periods?
You should consult a GP if your periods are very heavy, painful, absent for several months (not pregnant), unusually frequent, or accompanied by severe symptoms like dizziness or extreme fatigue.
Can a GP help with menopause symptoms?
Yes. A GP can provide support for hot flushes, mood changes, sleep disturbances, and hormonal changes. Treatment options may include lifestyle advice, hormone therapy, and other medical management strategies.
What contraceptive options are available through a GP?
A GP can provide advice and prescriptions for oral contraceptive pills, IUDs, contraceptive implants, injections, and emergency contraception. Your doctor will help you choose the safest and most suitable option.
When should I schedule a breast check?
Women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and report any lumps, changes in shape, nipple discharge, or skin changes to their GP immediately. Routine mammograms are recommended from age 40–50 onwards depending on guidelines and risk factors.
Can lifestyle changes improve women’s overall health?
Yes. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, stress management, adequate sleep, and preventive screenings significantly improve hormonal balance, heart health, bone strength, and mental wellbeing.
